Sukhbir Badal Backs Punjab Employees, Urges Them to Unite Under SAD Flag

Chandigarh, August 30, 2026: Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president Sukhbir Singh Badal has extended his support to Punjab government employees amid their ongoing agitation, urging them to remain united and raise their concerns collectively.

Badal appealed to employees to come together under the SAD flag, while criticising the Punjab government over the handling of employees' long-pending demands.

Badal Extends Support to Employees

The SAD chief said government employees have legitimate concerns that need to be addressed through meaningful dialogue rather than confrontation.

His statement comes amid heightened tensions between employee organisations and the Punjab government following the recent statewide Maha Hartal and the announcement of another phase of agitation.

Employee unions have been demanding action on issues including pending Dearness Allowance (DA) dues, pension-related matters and other service-related grievances.

Appeal for Unity

Badal called upon employees to maintain unity and collectively fight for their rights.

He urged them to strengthen their voice by coming together under the SAD banner, portraying the party as a platform that has historically represented the interests of Punjab's employees, farmers and other sections of society.

Fresh Employee Agitation

The development comes as Punjab government employee organisations prepare for another phase of protests.

The unions have announced district-level meetings and plans for an ‘Employees’ Assembly’, besides warning of a fresh Maha Strike if their demands remain unresolved.

The employee-government standoff has already affected government functioning in several parts of the state.

DA Arrears Remain Major Issue

One of the major points of contention is the payment of pending Dearness Allowance and Dearness Relief to employees and pensioners.

The issue has also reached the courts, with the Punjab and Haryana High Court directing the state government to release pending DA/DR instalments according to applicable rates.

The Punjab government is reportedly considering its legal options in the matter.

SAD Seeks Political Space

Badal's intervention also gives the SAD an opportunity to strengthen its political presence among government employees ahead of the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections.

With employee organisations representing a substantial section of Punjab's workforce and pensioners, their demands have increasingly become an important political issue.

The SAD has been seeking to position itself as an alternative to both the AAP government and Congress in Punjab.

Government-Employees Face-Off Continues

The Punjab government has maintained that employee issues should be resolved through dialogue and has objected to strikes that disrupt essential public services.

Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has previously said that dialogue and strikes cannot continue simultaneously, while employee organisations have maintained that meaningful negotiations are necessary to resolve their grievances.
