The Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) Political Affairs Committee (PAC) has unanimously decided to support the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), led by actor-politician Vijay, to form a government in the state, sources said.

Earlier, Vijay had requested support from the Congress party to form a government in the state, said Congress MP KC Venugopal.

TVK emerged as the single largest party in the assembly elections, winning 108 seats. However, it remains 10 short of the majority mark needed to form a government in the state.

Addressing media, Venugopal said, “TVK President Thiru Vijay has requested the Indian National Congress for support to form a Government in Tamil Nadu. He has spoken about drawing inspiration from Perumthalaivar Kamaraj as well, in his political mission.”

“The INC is clear that the mandate in Tamil Nadu is for a secular government that is committed to protecting the Constitution in letter and spirit. The INC is determined not to have the BJP and its proxies run the Govt. of Tamil Nadu in any manner. Accordingly, the Congress leadership has directed the TNCC to take a final decision on Thiru Vijay’s request, keeping in view the sentiments of the state reflected in the electoral verdict,” he said.

Vijay has emerged victorious from both constituencies he contested — Perambur in Chennai and Tiruchirappalli (East).

According to Election Commission norms, he will have to vacate one of the two seats. If that happens, TVK’s tally in the Assembly will come down from 108 to 107. The effective strength could further reduce to 106 once a Speaker is elected, as the Speaker does not vote during a confidence motion.
