The incident, which took place in broad daylight, has intensified concerns over law and order in the area.
Previously, Singh had submitted an application, expressing apprehension that he might be attacked. The former village head, also an advocate, has been attacked previously on two occasions.
According to Mirzapur superintendent of police Aparna Rajat Kaushik, the victim and the accused are residents of the same village and had a prior dispute over village matters, TOI reported.
“A case has been registered. Police teams are engaged in searching for the accused,” she said.
