Congress weighs V D Satheesan, K C Venugopal and Ramesh Chennithala for Kerala CM after UDFs big win, AICC consults MLAs as public displays highlight internal rivalry

After the UDP’s massive victory in Kerala, the Congress leadership is now stuck with three main names for the next chief minister post in the state.
The Congress high command has begun consultations to pick the state’s new head with V D Satheesan, K C Venugopal and Ramesh Chennithala emerging as the main contenders.
The Congress-led UDF won 102 seats in the 140-member Assembly, ending the CPI(M)-led LDF’s 10-year rule in the state. Congress alone secured 63 seats.

Leader of Opposition V D Satheesan is seen as a strong contender after leading the UDF campaign. Congress general secretary K C Venugopal, considered close to Rahul Gandhi, is also in the race, while senior leader Ramesh Chennithala remains a key claimant.
The Congress Legislature Party authorised the party high command to take the final call on the CM post after consulting MLAs and alliance partners. AICC observers Mukul Wasnik and Ajay Maken held meetings with elected MLAs and senior leaders in Thiruvananthapuram.
The leadership battle has also spilled into the public, with supporters of Satheesan and Venugopal putting up flex boards and holding demonstrations to back their preferred candidates.
