Suvendu Adhikari’s close aide Chandranath Rath killed
A close aide of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Suvendu Adhikari, identified as Chandranath Rath, was allegedly shot dead in West Bengal’s Madhyamgram on the night of Wednesday, May 6.
Police said eight unidentified assailants came on four bikes and fired four bullets at Rath. Rath was taken to a hospital but died from his injuries. Adhikari rushed to the hospital.
Who Was Chandranath Rath?
Chandranath Rath, a native of East Midnapore, worked as Adhikari’s personal assistant and was said to be involved in the BJP leader’s election campaign. Rath and Adhikari had worked together for decades and continued even after Adhikari switched from the Trinamool Congress to the BJP.
A Look At The Pattern Of Firing
Assaliants targeted Chandra and fired multiple rounds at him. Four holes were found on the left window glass after firing. The driver-side window glass was also broken by the outgoing bullets.
The attack pattern shows that driver was not the target, but he sustained injuries as he was sitting close to Chandra.
What Did the Eyewitness Say?
According to an eyewitness, a security guard of an apartment closest to the PO, he heard gunshots twice. The assailants left the spot on bikes. Chandra was immediately rushed to the Jessore Road side, where the hospital/nursing home is situated.
However, it is not ascertained who drove the car to the hospital, as Chandra’s driver was already injured. Police have launched a massive operation to nab the accused.
Speaking to CNN-News18, an eyewitness said that he saw a white Scorpio car parked on the road, and driving inside the car was sobbing and saying, “Sir, what has happened to you!”
“When we reached there, he told us that some people had shot them and fled,” an eyewitness said, adding that “we saw that a person on the other seat was in a blood-soaked condition, and blood was gushing out from his chest with faint sounds coming from his mouth.”
“At that time, he was alive but was not in a condition to speak,” the witness said, adding, “His chest was completely covered in blood. We told the driver to take him to the hospital immediately while we called the police. Two people had been shot in the incident.”
“The driver left for the hospital with them, and after they left, we called the police and informed them about the incident,” the eyewitness added.
