Shiv Sena UBT warns BJP led BMC against renaming King Edward Memorial Hospital as Kaushalya Eklavya Memorial Hospital, citing legacy concerns and possible law and order issues

Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation
Shiv Sena (UBT) on Monday warned the BJP-led Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) against a proposal to rename the iconic King Edward Memorial (KEM) Hospital, saying any such move could affect law and order in the city.
A delegation of Sena (UBT) leaders, led by MLA Ajay Choudhary and former mayor Kishori Pednekar, submitted a memorandum to the hospital dean opposing the proposed renaming of the 100-year-old institution as Kaushalya Eklavya Memorial Hospital.
The proposal follows a letter by Maharashtra minister Mangal Prabhat Lodha to the civic body seeking the name change. It was cleared by the BMC’s health committee last week and is likely to be taken up at the general body meeting.
Choudhary said KEM Hospital has a legacy spanning over a century and questioned the need for a name change. He pointed out that King Edward had contributed Rs 7 lakh and played a key role in the hospital’s establishment.
Speaking to reporters, Pednekar warned that any move to rechristen the hospital could lead to law and order issues in the city.
Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut also criticised the proposal, questioning its necessity. He said minister Lodha should instead consider naming the Trump Tower he built in the city after Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.
