West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Tuesday responded to a cryptic social media post by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, triggering political buzz online.

The exchange began after Sarma posted pictures with Adhikari from his oath-taking ceremony in Assam’s Guwahati and wrote on X: “Bad days for…..(You know who)”.

Responding to the post, Adhikari wrote: “No Prizes for Guessing, I guess”.

Neither leader explicitly mentioned who they were referring to in their posts. However, both BJP leaders have repeatedly spoken about what they describe as illegal immigration from Bangladesh and its alleged demographic impact in Assam and West Bengal.

Sarma was sworn in for a second consecutive term as Assam chief minister after the BJP-led alliance returned to power in the state for a third straight term. Widely seen as the architect of the BJP’s rise in the Northeast, Sarma has built much of his political messaging around migration, land encroachment and Assamese identity politics.

During the Assam election campaign, Sarma had said his government would “break the backbone of infiltrators” and promised intensified eviction and anti-encroachment drives if voted back to power. His critics, however, have accused him of pursuing divisive identity politics and “bulldozer governance”.

Adhikari, meanwhile, was recently sworn in as West Bengal’s first BJP Chief Minister following the party’s victory in the Assembly polls. He too has repeatedly alleged that infiltration from Bangladesh has altered the demographic balance in parts of Bengal and affected Hindu communities in border districts.

One of the first major decisions announced by Adhikari’s Cabinet was to expedite the transfer of land to the Border Security Force for fencing sections of the India-Bangladesh border in the state. The Bengal chief minister said the move was aimed at plugging gaps along the border and curbing infiltration and smuggling.
