High UV levels In Kerala? Here’s How You Can Protect Yourself

As Kerala issues orange and yellow alerts after UV index hits 9 in some areas, tips on preventing skin cancer and eye risks caused due to too much exposure of UV radiation.

As temperatures have started to rise in several states, there is also a risk of high levels of ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Kerala has already reported areas which have witnessed high levels of UV radiation.

The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) on Wednesday issued an orange alert in Konni in Pathanamthitta and Munnar in Idukki, where the UVI touched 9, and Changanassery in Kottayam and Chengannur in Alappuzha, where it stood at 8.

Yellow alert has been issued in locations that have recorded a UVI of 7, including Kottarakkara (Kollam), Thrithala (Palakkad), Ollur (Thrissur), Ponnani (Malappuram), and Kalamassery (Ernakulam), while Beypore (Kozhikode) and Mananthavady (Wayanad) recorded a UVI of 6.

Is UV Dangerous?

Ultraviolet radiation is beneficial for our health as it helps our skin to produce essential vitamin D, which is important for bones, blood cells and immune system.

However, excessive UV radiation may cause Melanoma, which is the most dangerous skin cancer. The radiation boosts skin cancer by damaging DNA in skin cells.

Besides, it also leads to skin ageing, contributing to wrinkles and loosened folds. The exposure to UV radiation has also been linked to eye problems such as cataracts.

How To Avoid UV Damage?

To stay safe while enjoying outdoor activities, consider the following tips:

Wear UPF-Rated Clothing: Invest in UV-protective garments such as jackets, shirts, and leggings made with UPF 50+ fabric. These block harmful rays while keeping you comfortable.

Use UV Accessories: Hats, scarves, and face shields provide additional protection for exposed areas.

Apply Sunscreen: Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher and reapply every two hours, especially after sweating or swimming.

Protect Your Eyes: UV-blocking sunglasses shield your eyes and the surrounding skin.

Avoid Peak UV Hours: Limit direct sun exposure between 10 am and 3 pm when UV rays are strongest.
