Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday launched a sharp attack on Trinamool Congress in West Bengal, accusing it of being anti-women and calling on the state’s women voters to hold the party accountable.

Addressing the rally in Jhargram, he said, “The BJP tried to ensure that women start benefiting from reservations from 2029. But the anti-women TMC opposed it in Parliament.”

“The TMC resorted to every kind of deceit and trickery so that Bengal’s 33 percent women could not become MLAs and MPs. Now, Bengal’s women must punish the TMC for this sin,” he added.

PM Modi alleged that the party had failed women in West Bengal and opposed their political representation.

“I want to caution the sisters of Bengal about the misdeeds of the TMC. The TMC came to power talking about ‘Ma, Mati, Manush’ but the TMC has betrayed the mothers. In the recent past, you also saw in Parliament that the BJP tried to ensure that reservation for women in elections starting from 2029 begins, but the anti-women TMC opposed it in Parliament. The TMC resorted to every kind of deceit and trickery so that women of Bengal could not get 33% reservation,” he said.

The Prime Minister alleged that the party resisted the push for 33 percent reservation for women in Parliament and state assemblies.

“The entire country wanted a law to be enacted providing 33 percent reservation for women in Parliament and state assemblies. There was a debate on this in Parliament,” Modi said.

He further claimed that the party was wary of increased representation of women in the West Bengal Assembly. “But TMC did not want more women MLAs to be elected to the assembly next time, because if that happened, they would raise their voices for women’s rights,” he said.

“That is why TMC has opposed the reservation for women. At the time of voting, you must also punish TMC for this crime,” the Prime Minister added, appealing to voters to hold the party accountable.

The PM accused TMC of stalling greater representation of women in the assembly through its alliance with the Indian National Congress, while also alleging a push for religion-based reservations.

“By allying with Congress, the TMC has thwarted the entry of even more women into the assembly. Now, they are seeking reservations based on religion, insulting the Constitution. Shameful!” PM Modi said.
