New Delhi, September 1, 2026: A teenage girl was allegedly gang-raped inside a moving sleeper bus after she sought a lift during heavy rain in Greater Noida, in a case that has raised fresh questions over the safety of women and minors travelling in public and private buses.
According to Delhi Police, the incident took place on the night of August 4 near Pari Chowk in Greater Noida. The teenager, who was travelling from Mainpuri in Uttar Pradesh to meet relatives in Noida, reportedly got off at the wrong location amid darkness and heavy rain.
Teenager Asked for a Lift
Police said the girl, stranded in the rain, signalled to an approaching sleeper bus for help.
The driver and conductor allegedly told her that they were heading towards Noida Sector 63, where she wanted to go, and allowed her to board the vehicle.
Police have said that the bus was not carrying passengers at the time. The two accused allegedly then sexually assaulted the girl after the vehicle started moving.
Alleged Assault During the Journey
According to the police account, the teenager was allegedly assaulted inside the moving bus by the driver and conductor.
When she resisted, the accused allegedly threatened to kill her, police said. The bus subsequently continued towards Delhi, with the teenager eventually being abandoned near Kashmere Gate.
Reports indicate that the bus travelled roughly 40–47 kilometres before reaching the Delhi area.
Driver and Conductor Arrested
Delhi Police arrested the two accused, identified in reports as driver Kuldeep and conductor Sandeep.
Police said CCTV footage and human intelligence were used during the investigation, and the suspects were traced to the bus's parking location in Timarpur.
The bus was also taken into police custody as part of the investigation.
Case Registered Under POCSO
The case has been registered under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
The survivor was produced before the Child Welfare Committee, while police said that her medical examination and counselling were conducted. She was subsequently handed over to her family.
Questions Over Bus Safety
The case has also raised questions about compliance with safety measures for passenger buses.
Reports said the sleeper bus had curtains covering its windows, potentially reducing visibility from outside. The vehicle reportedly travelled through several major routes and crossings without being stopped at a police checkpoint.
The incident has renewed concerns about whether mandatory safety measures for buses are being effectively implemented and monitored.
Jurisdiction Issue Emerges
Another issue has surfaced over the jurisdiction of the case.
Although the alleged assault occurred in the Greater Noida/Gautam Buddh Nagar area, Delhi Police registered the case after the girl approached Kashmere Gate Police Station.
Reports have quoted UP Police as questioning whether Delhi Police informed them about the incident, while Delhi Police has said the case was registered there because the survivor approached its jurisdiction.
Investigation Underway
The case has triggered renewed debate over the security of women and children travelling by road, particularly when buses operate without passengers or outside their regular routes.
The investigation is continuing, and the allegations against the accused will be tested through the legal process.
