India on Friday said it remains in touch with the United Kingdom over the extradition of fugitive diamond merchant Nirav Modi, who is wanted in India in connection with a multi-billion-dollar bank fraud case.

Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said legal proceedings in the matter are currently underway in the UK. He added that India is continuing engagement with the British authorities on the extradition request.

“We have been in touch with the UK side on the extradition request. We understand that legal proceedings in this particular matter are currently underway,” Jaiswal said.

He further said the government remains fully committed to ensuring that fugitives are brought back to India to face the law of the land.

“But to tell you that the government of India remains fully committed to ensuring that fugitives are brought back to India to face the law of the land,” he added.

The MEA spokesperson’s comments come days after CNN-News18 reported that fugitive diamantaire could be brought back to India soon, with top government sources indicating that the extradition process has entered its final stage. A teams from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) are already in London to facilitate the process.

The report further noted that most major legal hurdles in the United Kingdom have been effectively exhausted, clearing the way for his return.

Nirav Modi, who is accused in the multi-billion dollar fraud involving Punjab National Bank, has been at the centre of India’s efforts to bring back economic offenders who fled the country.
