Two students from a reputed South Mumbai institution died after a suspected drug overdose during a live concert at the Nesco Complex in Goregaon, triggering concern over alleged drug consumption at large public gatherings.

The incident, which reportedly took place the night before yesterday, prompted a police investigation.

Authorities suspect that the students may have consumed drugs during the event, which led to a severe deterioration in their health.

The concert, organised at the Nesco Complex, was attended by an estimated 3,000 to 4,000 people.

Panic reportedly spread among attendees after the condition of the students worsened, prompting emergency intervention.

Apart from the two fatalities, another female student who attended the event was hospitalised and was undergoing treatment.

She was reported to be in critical condition.

Subsequently, law enforcement officials from the Vanrai Police Station registered a case in connection with the incident and initiated an investigation to ascertain the circumstances that led to the deaths.

Police were probing the possibility that drugs were consumed during the event and are examining how the suspected substances were procured and circulated among attendees.

In connection with the case, the Vanrai Police have arrested five accused individuals.

Those taken into custody include the party organiser as well as some students who were allegedly linked to the suspected drug consumption.

Police officials also sent blood samples of the deceased students for forensic analysis.

The forensic examination is expected to determine the exact cause of death and identify the substances that may have been consumed prior to the incident.

The findings of the forensic report are likely to play a crucial role in establishing whether the deaths were directly caused by an overdose.

Investigators were continuing to gather details regarding the sequence of events at the concert and are expected to question additional individuals who were present at the venue.
