In Kerala, the festival of Vishu is widely celebrated as the beginning of a new year, even though the Malayalam calendar officially starts with the month of Chingam. This apparent contradiction has both historical and cultural roots. According to experts, the Malayalam calendar, known as Kollavarsham, was formally introduced around 825 CE, when Chingam was designated as the first month following an official decision. However, Vishu had already been observed long before this as a significant seasonal and agricultural marker.

Why Has Vishu Always Been Seen As A New Beginning?

Astrology expert Raveendran Kalarickal explained to Malayali news website Manorma that Vishu aligns with the spring equinox period and traditionally marks the start of agricultural activities such as sowing and ploughing. This seasonal importance made it a natural new beginning for communities dependent on farming.

Not at all. Similar New Year festivals are observed across India during this period, including Puthandu in Tamil Nadu, Bihu in Assam and Baisakhi in Punjab- all tied to seasonal and agricultural cycles. While Chingam marks the official start of the calendar year, Vishu continues to represent a cultural and agricultural New Year deeply rooted in tradition.
