As many as six people got stranded inside a lift at a mall in Maharashtra’s Nagpur for a prolonged period, prompting them to smash the glass to make a way for escape.

The incident — which took place at Fortune Mall in Nagpur’s Sitabuldi area — occurred after the lift malfunctioned midway, leaving the people inside trapped for several minutes, according to an India Today report.

With no ventilation and immediate escape, those stuck inside the lift soon began to feel suffocated. Describing the ordeal, one of the occupants said, “We were stuck inside for a long time. It became difficult to breathe and we felt suffocated,”, as quoted by the outlet.

Repeated calls were made to the mall authorities, but there was no immediate response, they said. Amid the suffocation and panic, the occupants smashed the glass door and escaped.

As per the India Today report, all six people were rescued without injuries. However, the incident has fueled concerns over the safety of citizens in public spaces.
