Following the strong performance of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) in the Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections 2026, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) has slipped to the third position. As a result, celebration tents are being removed from the party headquarters. Visuals shared by ANI show workers taking down tents at Anna Arivalayam, the DMK headquarters.

About two hours after the counting of postal ballots began and EVMs were opened for multi-round counting, Vijay’s TVK surged ahead of its Dravidian rivals—the DMK and the AIADMK—with the ruling party struggling to keep pace.

According to early trends, TVK is leading in 102 constituencies, while the AIADMK is ahead in 72 seats. The DMK has fallen to third place, leading in 53 constituencies.

If the trends remain same, Vijay may well follow in the footsteps of MGR and Jayalalithaa, emerging as a film star who successfully transitions to a prominent role in politics.

Vijay’s TVK Set To Create History?

With TVK putting up a strong show in the 2026 Assembly elections, the party will creat history if the results go as per the trends. As counting progressed for votes cast on April 23, TVK was leading in 109 of the 234 constituencies, signalling a tectonic shift in the state’s political landscape.

Early trends pointed to a significant wave against the ruling DMK. In a surprising development, Chief Minister M K Stalin was trailing TVK candidate V S Babu in the Kolathur constituency, while Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin was behind TVK’s D Selvam in Chepauk-Thiruvalikeni, according to Election Commission data.

If TVK manages to cross the halfway mark of 118 seats, it would mark an unprecedented achievement in the state. No political party in Tamil Nadu has come to power within just two years of its formation. At the time of the latest update, the AIADMK was leading in 63 seats, while the DMK was ahead in 40.

While AIADMK founder M G Ramachandran rose to power in 1977, five years after launching his party, he had already spent decades in politics as part of the DMK. In contrast, Vijay’s rapid ascent, if it culminates in a majority, would stand out as a truly unique moment in the state’s political history.
