Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections: Tamil Nadu awaits the results of the 2026 Assembly election results, which can fundamentally reshape the political trajectory of the state. The state is witnessing a bipolar contest between the ruling DMK and the AIADMK, with actor-turned-politician Vijay aiming for a big entry.

While most exit polls have suggested that DMK will retain the Chief Minister’s chair, a poll by Axis My India has sent shockwaves across the state by suggesting that Vijay’s TVK will dent the ruling party’s margins. The results are not only about who gets the CM seat, but would serve as a testament to Tamil’s political culture deeply rooted in federal autonomy.

Chief Minister MK Stalin has struck a confident note about DMK’s victory in the state, assuring that his government is still popular among the masses. The AIADMK and TVK have also rejected the predictions, saying the mandate would be in their favour.

What’s Different In Tamil Nadu This Time?

The political battle in Tamil Nadu is generally between the DMK and the AIADMK. However, the entry of Tamil superstar Vijay into the arena with the TVK has added an interesting layer in the battle, changing the political geometry.

The 2026 election has been fought largely on the grounds of linguistic identity and the protection of state autonomy. The DMK framed its campaign on the “Dravidian Model” of governance and its resistance to central imposition, while the AIADMK targeted the ruling dispensation over law and order, inflation and alleged corruption.

The TVK, banking on Vijay’s massive popularity, has termed the DMK as its primary political rival and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) – allied with the AIADMK – as its ideological rival. The party based its campaign on social justice and inclusive growth.

The election, held across all 234 constituencies on April 23, witnessed a record voter turnout of over 84 per cent — the highest in the state since Independence.

Impact Of Tamil Nadu Election Results

The outcome of the high-octane battle in Tamil Nadu will decide not just the immediate governance, but also the state’s long-term political direction. A DMK victory would lead to continuity in Tamil Nadu’s policies of welfare-driven governance and resistance from the Centre.

However, any significant gains by the AIADMK or the DMK could structurally alter the balance of power. The AIADMK has struggled to achieve organisational and ideological unity since Jayalalithaa’s passing, and its partnership with the BJP has diluted its Dravidian stance.

The most uncertain scenario would be a victory for the TVK. If the exit poll by Axis My India holds, it would mark an unprecedented political debut by Vijay, making him a potential kingmaker and forcing the Dravidian parties into the uncharacteristic role of junior partners or opposition leaders.

Key Seats To Look Out

Most eyes would be on Kolathur, represented by Chief Minister M K Stalin, and Chepauk-Thiruvallikeni, represented by Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin. These seats have traditionally remained strongholds of the DMK.

Perambur has emerged as a key battleground with actor Vijay entering the electoral fray through TVK. His presence is expected to influence voter sentiment across Chennai. Vijay is also competing against AIADMK in Tiruchirappalli (East).

Edappadi, located in Salem district, is also a key constituency featuring AIADMK chief Edappadi K Palaniswami, who is seeking to retain his stronghold.
