Senior Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar) leader and Baramati MP, Supriya Sule, had a narrow escape on Saturday evening after her vehicle was struck by a speeding SUV on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway. The incident occurred while she was travelling from Pune to Mumbai, resulting in significant damage to her car but leaving all occupants unharmed.

Taking to social media to share the “awful experience”, Sule credited the use of seat belts for the safety of herself and her staff. The collision has once again cast a spotlight on the recurring issues of overspeeding and reckless driving on one of India’s busiest arterial roads.

The Collision Near Khalapur

The accident took place on Saturday, after Sule’s vehicle had crossed the Khalapur toll plaza, approximately 29 kilometres before the Madap tunnel. According to police reports, a white SUV—bearing a Gujarat registration number (GJ13CF5257)—grazed the side of the MP’s car while attempting a reckless manoeuvre at high speed.

Sule was seated in the rear of the vehicle on the side that sustained the impact. While the door of her car was badly damaged, the structural integrity of the vehicle and the fact that she was securely buckled in prevented any physical injuries. Her chauffeur and personal assistant, who were also in the car at the time, escaped the ordeal without a scratch.

Police Action and Road Safety Appeal

Following the incident, the Highway Safety Patrol (HSP) acted swiftly, detaining the SUV and its occupants near the Madap tunnel. Investigators revealed that the vehicle was being driven by a resident of Gujarat who was returning from a trip to Lonavala with friends. Although Sule did not initially lodge a formal complaint, the Khalapur police registered a suo motu First Information Report (FIR) under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Motor Vehicles Act for rash and negligent driving.

In a poignant appeal to motorists, Sule shared the details of the vehicle that hit her, urging commuters to remain alert and disciplined. “Incidents like these are a serious reminder that overspeeding and negligence on our roads can put countless lives at risk,” she stated. She emphasised that road safety is a collective responsibility, noting that one’s safety often depends on the conduct of others sharing the highway.

The Baramati MP has resumed her official duties, using the platform to advocate for stricter adherence to traffic protocols, particularly the consistent use of seat belts for all passengers.
