You’re not safe, it seems, even from your pasta company overhearing your dinner conversations. Prego has created a tiny recorder which can record conversations over meals, preserving memories in sound form to be enjoyed in the future.

The device, known as the “Connection Keeper,” is built to sit at the centre of the table. It works with a single button — press to record, press again to stop. There’s no screen, no app and no internet connection, with recordings stored locally and transferred manually.

The idea, developed in partnership with StoryCorps, is to encourage people to put their phones away and focus on real conversations. The device also comes with prompt cards to help spark discussions, especially for families who may struggle to disconnect during meals.

Users can choose to keep recordings private or upload them to StoryCorps, where some may even become part of a larger archive of oral histories.

But the concept has triggered a strong reaction online.

While some see it as a thoughtful way to preserve everyday moments, others are far more sceptical.

“Things are getting so dystopian. Makes me want to go back to 20 years ago and get a flip phone and a landline,” one user wrote.

Another comment pointed to a broader concern about how companies operate. “Companies used to make products that were designed to work as long as possible with good quality. But since they are collecting our data, they shift the model into poor quality products made to be damaged easily forcing us to change for the new ones.”

Questions around data use have also come up. “My question is what are they even doing with this data?” one user asked, reflecting a wider unease about how recorded conversations could potentially be handled.

Some reactions went further, calling for a shift in consumer behaviour. “We need to stop giving corporates our money and start supporting local businesses,” another comment read.

The device itself is being released in limited numbers and is not positioned as a mainstream tech product. Instead, it appears to be more of a statement about modern habits — particularly how screens and constant connectivity have changed the way people interact at the dinner table.
