The wife of one of the employees of a BPO unit of Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) in Nashik who has been held over sexual harassment charges has alleged that unrelated cases were wrongly clubbed, stemming from a personal dispute involving another accused to defame her husband.

She claimed that her husband was caught up in a fallout between Danish Shaikh and a female colleague who accused him of rape. She alleged that unrelated cases were clubbed together, leading to multiple arrests, despite her husband having minimal interaction with the main accused.

“It was a relationship gone wrong between Danish Shaikh and one of the complainants that has ruined the lives of all the others. They were not involved. Cases not linked to each other have been clubbed,” the woman told the Indian Express.

Police have registered nine FIRs against employees of the unit, including allegations of sexual harassment, rape and hurting religious sentiments. Seven employees have been arrested, while one woman staff member is reportedly absconding. All accused have been suspended by the company, and a detailed internal probe is underway.

The Special Investigation Team has intensified its probe, increasing the number of identified alleged targets from nine to twelve and examining possible international links, including a Malaysia-based preacher.

As per complaints, Danish Sheikh, who has been accused of rape and sexual harassment, was in a relationship with a complainant and allegedly concealed his marital status. Authorities claimed that he established sexual relations with her on the promise of marriage and also influenced her to follow his religion, leading to additional charges.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, the woman told the news outlet that her husband had minimal interaction with Danish and was unaware of the allegations until he was called by police for questioning. He was later arrested, she said, after additional complaints were filed.

In one of the FIRs, a woman employee has accused a senior colleague of inappropriate behaviour, including making suggestive remarks, touching her without consent, and retaliating after she complained to supervisors. Another accused, operations manager Ashiwini Chainani, faces allegations of discouraging a complainant from pursuing a sexual harassment complaint despite being part of the company’s internal committee.

Police officials said the FIRs were registered based on statements recorded from multiple complainants, some before a magistrate. “These are serious offences. We have acted on the basis of complaints and will file chargesheets after completing the investigation,” an officer from the Special Investigation Team (SIT) said.

National Commission for Women has also taken cognisance of the matter and constituted a fact-finding committee. The panel, which includes a retired judge and a former police chief, is expected to visit Nashik to conduct an independent inquiry.

Meanwhile, operations at the TCS office in Nashik have been suspended and movement within the premises restricted as police intensify their investigation.
