Senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader Hitendra Nath Goswami on Monday said he held no personal grudge against Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi after defeating him in the 2026 Assam Assembly Election.
Speaking to reporters in Guwahati, Goswami downplayed his electoral victory and said his focus remained on public welfare.
“I won the election, but that doesn’t mean I have done something big. I am always devoted to the people… I have nothing against him (Gaurav Gogoi),” he said.
Goswami defeated Gogoi in the Jorhat Assembly constituency by a margin of 23,182 votes in one of the high-profile contests of the election.
The BJP-led NDA registered a dominant victory in Assam, winning 82 seats in the 126-member Assembly and securing a third consecutive term in the state. The Congress was reduced to 19 seats.
BJP leaders credited the victory to the leadership of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
BJP candidate Tarang Gogoi claimed the Gandhi family no longer had political influence in Assam.
“People want development and they have voted for that. They want Himanta Biswa Sarma as CM and Narendra Modi as Prime Minister,” he said, adding that “Rahul Gandhi is a pessimist.”
Another BJP candidate, Suruj Dehingia, thanked party workers for their campaign efforts, saying their “hard work has paid off.”
BJP MP Pradan Baruah said the opposition lacked a “solid ground” and credited the NDA’s victory to organisational strength, technology-driven campaigning and the developmental agenda pursued by the BJP government.
The election marked the first Assam Assembly polls fought under Himanta Biswa Sarma’s leadership as chief minister, with the BJP improving its tally compared to the 2021 elections.
