Congress MP Shashi Tharoor on Thursday congratulated VD Satheesan after he was named as the leader of the Congress Legislature Party and Kerala Chief Minister-designate.
In a long post on X, Tharoor, an MP from Thiruvananthapuram, said Satheesan for his tenacity, conviction, and years of dedicated service to the party and people. But he said that the mandate that “propelled Satheesan to office is not one man’s victory, but it is a mandate for Team UDF”.
The Congress parliamentarian said every senior leader bears an important role and responsibility in ensuring this government lives up to the expectations of the people of Kerala.
“The strength of our alliance lies in its plurality, and we all look forward to every constituent working in concert to build a Kerala that is prosperous, just, and forward-looking. The people of Kerala have placed their trust in us. Let us honour it by working together to transform the state,” Tharoor wrote on X.
The Congress-led UDF secured a more-than-two-thirds majority in the Kerala Assembly elections, but the party was unable to decide on its chief ministerial candidate amid lobbying by different camps and protests by workers at the grassroots level.

Shashi Tharoor, KC Venugopal and Ramesh Chennithala were also being considered as front-runners for the Kerala CM post.
Congress spokesperson Dr Shama Mohamed said the high command consulted former KPCC presidents, alliance partners, many party workers and general secretaries to get to pick Satheesan as the CM. “Every party worker, if you are a true Congressi, always agrees with whatever decision the high command takes,” she said.
Congress leader Chandy Oommen said, “We are happy, and Satheesan is not a novice. He has been an MLA for more than 25 years. He has become an MLA six times, and he has led the party. He has led the party to victory…”
