Sonam Raghuvanshi — the accused in the murder of her husband Raja Raghuvanshi during their honeymoon in 2025 — was granted bail by a Meghalaya court over a “clerical error” by the police.

While granting bail to the accused, the court noted that her arrest memo had mentioned a section of India’s criminal code that doesn’t exist.

The memo had mentioned Section 403(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, while the relevant section on murder is actually number 103(1).

According to the court order, Sonam Raghuavnshi’s arrest memo, inspection memo, intimation of rights memo, and even entries in the case diary mentioned a “non-existent Section 403(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita”, India Today reported.

While the police argued it was a “clerical error”, the court observed the accused was not given “effective grounds for arrest”.

Bail With Restrictions

While granting bail, the court imposed certain restrictions on Sonam Raghuvanshi, directing she should not leave Shillong without prior permission.

Her brother, Govind Raghuvanshi, said his family won’t be keeping her at home post her release.

“We won’t keep her in the house right now If my parents want to bring her home, I won’t be staying at home”, he said, as quoted by India Today.

What Is The Case?

Sonam Raghuvanshi is accused of orchestrating the murder of her husband, Raja Raghuvanshi, during their honeymoon in Shillong in 2025.

The couple had got married in May 2025 and travelled to Meghalaya for their honeymoon. Days later, Raja was reported missing and on June 2, his body was found in a gorge.

According to the police, Sonam conspired to kill her husband along with other people. Eight people, including Sonam, were arrested in the case.
