In a striking shift from traditional politics, the Tamil Nadu assembly elections have thrown up a new crop of legislators—professionals, political consultants, and grassroots workers—who have broken through without legacy or deep political backing. Among them, Keerthana Sampath and N Sunil Anand stand out as powerful examples of how politics is increasingly opening up to unconventional entrants.
Leading the new wave is TVK’s Keerthana Sampath, a former digital media lead at Showtime Consulting and an ex-I-PAC political consultant, who has scripted a remarkable electoral victory from Sivakasi, winning by a margin of 14,000 votes. Once part of high-level strategy rooms crafting campaigns for top leaders, Keerthana has now transitioned into a leader herself, proving that political expertise can translate into electoral success.
With no traditional political backing, Keerthana contested the polls and, within a span of just a few months, built a strong, people-driven campaign. Her approach was simple but effective—step out of the boardroom and onto the streets. She traversed every part of Sivakasi, engaging directly with voters, listening to long-standing grievances, and building trust at the grassroots level.
Having previously worked with prominent political consultancies like Showtime Consulting and I-PAC, and contributing to campaigns for leaders, including Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, Keerthana brought with her a deep understanding of governance, policy, and campaign strategy. However, her biggest learning, she has often noted, was recognising the gap between policy-making and ground realities, something she sought to bridge through her campaign.
Over the past year, her relentless door-to-door outreach, village visits, and community interactions helped her establish a strong local connect, ultimately translating into votes. Her victory is now being seen as a testament to the power of grassroots politics over traditional political structures.
Adding to this narrative is N Sunil Anand (53), another unlikely winner on a TVK ticket. Originally from Turuvekere in Tumakuru district, Anand later settled in Mettupalayam, where he built his life and career. With education up to Class 11 and a background in real estate and business, Anand represents the quintessential grassroots leader.
A long-time fan of actor-turned-politician Vijay and an active TVK worker, Anand rose through the ranks of the party before contesting the election. His victory from Mettupalayam highlights how local connect and organisational work at the ground level can outweigh formal education or political pedigree.
The success of leaders like Keerthana Sampath and Sunil Anand signals a broader shift in Tamil Nadu’s political landscape where credibility, accessibility, and grassroots engagement are beginning to challenge the dominance of established political dynasties.
