At least 16 workers were injured on Thursday afternoon after a massive fire broke out at a chemical factory in Gujarat’s Bharuch district, officials said, triggering a large-scale emergency response in the industrial area.

The blaze started around 1 pm at Metropolitan Eximchem Pvt Ltd, located in the Jhagadia Gujarat Industrial Development Corporation (GIDC) estate, Deputy Superintendent of Police Ajay Meena told PTI.

All 16 injured workers were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment. No fatalities have been reported so far, Meena said.

Emergency response teams and local police personnel reached the site soon after receiving information about the incident. Fire tenders and ambulances were deployed and remain stationed at the location as operations continue, he added.

Efforts to bring the fire under control were still underway at the time of reporting. Along with the Jhagadia fire brigade, two additional fire tenders from the disaster prevention and management centre in Ankleshwar were pressed into service to help contain the blaze, an official said.

Visuals from the scene showed thick plumes of smoke billowing into the sky, visible from a considerable distance, highlighting the intensity of the fire. Authorities have not yet disclosed the cause of the blaze.
