Amritsar, September 7, 2026: A suspected drone sighting near Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport, Amritsar, triggered a security alert on Sunday night and temporarily disrupted flight operations. However, police investigations have now indicated that the drone was reportedly being used to record a sports tournament being held in a nearby village.
The incident initially raised concerns because the drone was spotted close to the airport’s sensitive operational area.
Seven Flights Diverted
The drone was reportedly noticed around 10 pm, following which air traffic operations were temporarily affected as a precautionary measure.
According to reports, seven incoming flights were diverted to Delhi and Chandigarh while security agencies assessed the situation.
Flight operations reportedly resumed after around 90 minutes once the situation was brought under control.
Drone Was Being Used for Sports Tournament Recording
Police investigation reportedly found that the drone had been deployed to capture aerial footage of a local sports tournament.
The drone is believed to have moved towards the airport area, reportedly due to wind conditions. Investigators have identified the people associated with the drone operation and the tournament.
Police are examining the matter and legal action is reportedly being initiated for violating restrictions applicable around the airport.
Airport Area Falls Under Drone Restrictions
The area surrounding Amritsar airport is highly sensitive, and drone operations are subject to strict restrictions and permissions.
Flying an unauthorised drone near an airport can pose a significant risk to aircraft operations, even when there is no malicious intent.
No Terror or Cross-Border Angle Confirmed
At present, there is no confirmed evidence linking the drone incident to terrorism or a cross-border conspiracy. The police investigation points towards the drone being used for sports-event videography.
Nevertheless, the incident highlights the risks of flying drones without proper permission near airports and other sensitive installations.
Why This Incident Matters
What may have started as an attempt to record a sporting event from the air ended up affecting airport operations and causing flight diversions.
The incident serves as a reminder that drone operators must strictly follow aviation and security regulations, particularly around airports.
