Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s push for resuming work from home, curbing the use of fuel, and avoiding foreign travel in the wake of war-related economic disruptions has received support from Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Health Minister JP Nadda.

During a public meeting in Hyderabad, PM Modi urged citizens to adopt “national interest first” measures to reduce the economic impact of disruptions caused by the US-Iran war by reducing fuel consumption, avoiding unnecessary foreign travel, pausing gold purchases and restarting “Covid-era practices” like working from home.

Several ministers in PM Modi’s cabinet supported the proposed measures, signalling concern within the government over rising import costs, depleting foreign reserves and inflation in case of a prolonged conflict.

“In this era of global crisis, Modi ji has made a visionary appeal to the countrymen. His call for moderation in the use of petrol-diesel, promoting work from home, and abandoning chemical fertilizers to adopt natural farming is a clear roadmap for making India a self-reliant and energy-secure nation,” said Amit Shah on X.

JP Nadda also echoed PM Modi’s call, highlighting that India was in the throes of a massive global challenge.

Union Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Hardeep Singh Puri, also emphasised that such measures would help the nation conserve energy, save on the energy import bill and overcome the challenges arising out of the serious military conflict.

“India is among very few countries which have not raised energy prices and has maintained steady supplies to the citizens even as we see crises unfold in many parts of the world. Our energy sector is absorbing the brunt of the impact,” he said on X.

Puri emphasised that the Centre has managed to protect more than 60 million consumers and reduced excise duties on retail fuel since the war began, but revenue losses surged to Rs 14,000 crore in a month.
