At least 9 people were killed after and four of them including the driver suffered serious injuries after a tourist van from Kerala plunged into a gorge at the Valparai hills in Coimbatore district of Tamil Nadu on Friday.
Extending condolences, Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote on X, “I was deeply saddened to learn of the accident that occurred in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu. I extend my deepest condolences to those who have lost their loved ones in this accident. I pray that the injured recover swiftly,” he said.
According to police, the traveler tempo carrying 13 people from Kerala’s Malappuram district lost control while descending the Valparai-Pollachi hill road. The vehicle crashed into a barrier at the 13th hairpin bend and rolled down a deep gorge.
Police said, the deceased include one man and seven women. The driver and four others sustained injuries. Those injured have been rescued and shifted to the Government Hospital in Pollachi for treatment.
Meanwhile, Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan expressed grief over the loss of lives and extended condolences to the families of the victims.
Police and fire service teams carried out rescue operations, retrieving bodies from the gorge and shifting the injured to Pollachi Government Hospital.
