In a move aimed at improving transport and connectivity in Delhi-NCR, the Delhi government on Saturday approved a large expansion plan of the metro network. The plan includes more than 97 kilometres of new lines and 65 stations across seven corridors under Phase V(B).
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said the project, estimated to cost Rs 48,204.56 crore, is designed to connect outer and developing parts of the city with central Delhi. The aim is to improve access and ease travel across the Capital.
Priority corridors
Officials said four of the seven corridors have been marked as priority projects and will be taken up on a fast-track basis. The government has set a target to complete these priority corridors by 2029.
The Chief Minister said the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) will divide the detailed project reports into priority and non-priority segments for phased implementation. She added that the project will support balanced and inclusive urban development across Delhi.
The detailed project report has already been prepared and submitted to the Centre and is awaiting Cabinet approval. The Delhi government cleared the proposal earlier this week after a meeting between the Chief Minister and DMRC officials. Final financial approval from both the Centre and Delhi will be required before work begins.
Expanding metro connectivity
The expansion is expected to bring areas such as Najafgarh, Narela, Mithapur and Khera Kalan onto the Metro map. The plan includes a mix of elevated and underground corridors, along with several interchange points to connect with the existing network.
According to the Chief Minister, the project will improve access to public transport in underserved areas and provide faster, safer and more convenient travel.
Key corridors
The Dhansa Bus Stand–Nangloi corridor will run for 11.859 km as a fully elevated route with nine stations. It will connect areas such as Ranhola, Bakkarwala and Najafgarh Extension, with interchanges at Nangloi and Dhansa Bus Stand.
The Central Secretariat–Kishangarh corridor will span 15.969 km, mostly underground, with 10 stations. It will extend connectivity to New Moti Bagh, RK Puram and Jawaharlal Nehru University, with multiple interchange points.
The Samaypur Badli–Narela corridor will extend the existing line by 12.89 km with eight elevated stations, covering areas such as Siraspur, Alipur and Narela.
The Kirti Nagar–Palam corridor, covering 9.967 km, will include six stations across underground and elevated sections, linking areas like Mayapuri and Sagarpur.
The Jor Bagh–Mithapur corridor will stretch 16.991 km with 12 stations, serving Lodhi Colony, Jaitpur and Moladband, along with key interchanges.
The Shastri Park–Mayur Vihar Phase III corridor will run for 13.197 km with eight stations, connecting Geeta Colony and Patparganj.
The final corridor from Keshavpuram to Rohini Sector 34 will span 16.285 km with 12 elevated stations, linking Pitampura, Rohini and Delhi Technological University.
The Chief Minister said the expansion will improve last-mile connectivity and reduce travel time across the city. Once completed, Phase V(B) is expected to significantly expand the Metro network and strengthen its role as a key mode of transport for daily commuters in Delhi.
