BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari’s close aide Chandranath Rath was allegedly shot dead by bike-borne assailants in Madhyamgram on Wednesday night, two days after the party’s historic win in the assembly election.
According to police, the BJP leader’s PA was hit by three out of four bullets fired at him while he was in a moving white Scorpio.
Police said the suspects followed his car and opened fire when it slowed down.
What We Know So Far
In the morning Chandra was at his native village, Chandipur, in East Midnapore. There he met the BJP supporters and workers and conveyed the message of Suvendu Adhikari: “Dada has requested you all to stay calm and not indulge or resort to any violence.”
Sources confirmed that the incident took place near his house in the evening when he was returning. Chandra’s vehicle was approaching his residence, which was approximately 200 metres from the spot of the incident. A car attempted to intercept and stop his Scorpio. As the vehicle slowed down, eight assailants on four motorcycles arrived and opened fire at him.
Police said Chandranath’s driver, Buddhadev Bera suffered three bullet injuries and is being treated in Apollo multi-speciality hospital in Kolkata. Doctors are examining him and preparing for the operation. He is conscious, sources said.
