The NDA and BJP have etched a new chapter in Assam’s political history. Surpassing expectations of over 100 seats, the people’s mandate has delivered a resounding victory. Following this historic win, the triumphant leader of the Assam BJP, CM Himanta Biswa Sarma, visited the party’s state headquarters. He was greeted by a massive gathering of supporters who celebrated the victory alongside their popular leader. Later, CM Sarma shared his insights with the media regarding the factors that shaped this election.

Criticism of Congress Over ‘Nasty’ Celebrity Politics

When asked if the controversy surrounding Zubeen Garg played a role in the election results, CM Sarma was clear that the cultural icon should remain above the political fray. “I don’t believe Zubeen Garg was the main issue in this election. I have always maintained that he is above politics,” Sarma stated. He criticised the Congress party for including the artist in their manifesto and leveraging his name during their campaign. “Congress indulged in nasty politics by involving Zubeen Garg in their electioneering. In doing so, they distanced themselves from the people of Assam. I believe the poor results faced by Congress are a direct consequence of the public’s disagreement with their decision to politicise him. The people of Assam have punished them for this approach.”

Rejection of the ‘Three Gogoi’ Narrative

The opposition’s attempt to leverage the “Three Gogoi” narrative—referring to Gaurav Gogoi, Akhil Gogoi (President of Raijor Dal), and Lurinjyoti Gogoi (President of Asom Jatiya Parishad)—failed to gain traction. CM Sarma argued that this strategy was an attempt to divide Assamese society along communal and title-based lines.

CM Sarma highlighted several key points regarding this narrative:

A Departure from Tradition: He noted that from Gopinath Bordoloi to Sarbananda Sonowal, Assam’s political history has remained free of “title” or “caste-based” politics.

Public Rejection: This was the first time such “title politics” was introduced, and according to Sarma, the public rejected it outright.

Inclusivity of the BJP: “In the Bharatiya Janata Party, we represent everyone—Gogois, Burhagohains, Borgohains, Das, Kalitas, Rajbanshis, Tribal, and non-Tribal communities. This is why we received support from the Barak Valley to the Hill districts, and from Lower to Upper Assam.”

Commitment to Land Eviction and Border Security

The Chief Minister also touched upon the government’s firm stance on land encroachment and national security.

On Land Eviction: CM Sarma confirmed that the government would accelerate its efforts to reclaim public land. “In our last term, we cleared 1.5 lakh bighas of land. In this term, we aim to exceed that amount.”

On the Indo-Bangla Border: Addressing the long-standing issue of border security, Sarma emphasised the need for a unified approach across state lines. He pointed out that while Assam has pushed to seal its portion of the border, the success of the initiative depends heavily on West Bengal, which shares the largest portion of the boundary.

“The BJP government has already promised that its first priority in West Bengal will be to allot the necessary land to the BSF for the completion of the fencing,” Sarma concluded, noting that previous delays were due to the West Bengal government’s reluctance to provide land to the central government.
