Addressing the nation, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday launched a scathing attack at the Opposition, saying that they “mercilessly crushed” the dreams of women by not allowing the women’s reservation bill to pass in Parliament. He also said that the Opposition committed a sin and they will be punished for it.
“The opposition has committed a sin by opposing women’s reservation, and they will surely be punished for this. Opposition parties have insulted our Constitution by defeating the bill,” PM Modi said.
Calling the outcome a setback for women’s empowerment, PM Modi said the government had made sincere efforts to secure the bill’s passage, but opposition resistance prevented it. He accused parties such as the Congress, DMK, TMC and Samajwadi Party of prioritising politics over progress.
“I seek forgiveness from all women of the country,” he said.
The Prime Minister alleged that the opposition had undermined a key reform aimed at ensuring 33 per cent reservation for women in legislatures. He said the defeat reflected a disregard for women’s aspirations.
“Today, every citizen of India is witnessing how the march of India’s women has been halted. The dreams of the country’s women have been mercilessly crushed, and despite our utmost efforts, we could not succeed,” he said.
PM Modi further claimed that parties opposing the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam were taking women’s support for granted and engaging in self-serving politics. He accused them of celebrating their political gains at the cost of women’s empowerment.
The Prime Minister maintained that the bill was designed to expand opportunities for women without reducing representation for any group. He also criticised what he described as “family-run parties”, suggesting they were reluctant to support reforms that could challenge their political interests.
“I expected the Congress to correct its past mistakes, but it missed an opportunity to script new history. The family-run parties do not want women to move forward as that could end their selfish politics,” he said.
PM Modi also accused the Congress of fuelling divisions, particularly by spreading concerns about a North-South imbalance.
“A woman forgets everything, but not her insult; this insult by the Congress and its allies will always remain in every woman’s heart,” he said.
He concluded by asserting that the proposed amendment was necessary for balanced and inclusive development across regions, reiterating that women’s empowerment remains central to the government’s agenda.
