Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address the nation at 8:30 p.m. tonight. The announcement comes a day after Opposition parties blocked the Women Reservation Bill in Parliament.

No details have been shared yet about what the Prime Minister will speak on. The address will be closely watched as political developments continue in Parliament.

The wait for women’s reservation in Parliament and state assemblies continues after the 131st Constitutional Amendment Bill failed to pass in the Lok Sabha on Friday.

The Bill aimed to introduce reservation for women in legislatures from 2029 and also increase the number of seats in the Lok Sabha. However, it did not secure the required support.

Out of 528 members who voted, 298 supported the Bill while 230 opposed it. The proposal needed 352 votes to reach the two-thirds majority required for a Constitutional amendment.

After the Bill failed to get enough votes, the government also requested Speaker Om Birla not to proceed with two other proposed laws.

These include the Delimitation Bill, 2026 and the Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2026.

According to the amendment Bill, the number of Lok Sabha seats was to be increased from the current 543 to a maximum of 850. This expansion was meant to help implement the women’s reservation policy before the 2029 parliamentary elections.

The proposal was linked to a delimitation exercise based on the 2011 Census. It also included plans to increase the number of seats in state assemblies and Union Territory legislatures to ensure 33 per cent reservation for women.

With the Bill failing in Parliament and no clear next steps announced, attention is now on the Prime Minister’s address later tonight. The speech comes at a time of heightened political debate, though its exact agenda remains unknown.
