This apparent contradiction has both historical and cultural roots. According to experts, the Malayalam calendar, known as Kollavarsham, was formally introduced around 825 CE, when Chingam was designated as the first month following an official decision. However, Vishu had already been observed long before this as a significant seasonal and agricultural marker.

Astrology expert Raveendran Kalarickal explained to Malayali news website Manorma that Vishu aligns with the spring equinox period and traditionally marks the start of agricultural activities such as sowing and ploughing.
