Keralam Assembly Elections 2026: Thripunithura Assembly constituency, located in Ernakulam district of Kerala, is one of the state’s politically significant urban seats. Part of the Ernakulam Lok Sabha constituency, Thripunithura has traditionally witnessed direct contests between the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) and the CPI(M)-led Left Democratic Front (LDF). However, the 2021 election marked a major shift, with the BJP opening its account on the seat.

Key Candidates

The Congress-led UDF has fielded Deepak Joy, while the LDF has nominated K. N. Unnikrishnan. The contest has become more intriguing with the entry of Anjali Nair from the Twenty20 banner, backed by the NDA. In addition, several Independent candidates and smaller parties are in the fray, further fragmenting the vote and making the electoral battle more competitive.

Thripunithura Seat: A Historic Shift In 2021

In the 2021 Kerala Assembly election, K. Babu of the Indian National Congress (INC) reclaimed the seat with 65,669 votes, securing around 40.38% vote share. He defeated M. Swaraj of the CPI(M), who polled 62,766 votes (38.59%), with a margin of 2,903 votes.

Despite finishing third, the BJP made a significant breakthrough. Kummanam Rajasekharan secured 45,206 votes (27.79%), marking the party’s strongest performance in the constituency and signalling its growing presence in Kerala’s urban pockets.

Thripunithura Last 5 Elections: Winners & Vote Trends

In 2021, K. Babu (INC) won with 40.38% vote share, defeating CPI(M) in a tight contest, while BJP emerged as a strong third force.

In 2016, M. Swaraj (CPI(M)) won the seat with 58,098 votes and about 39.64% vote share, defeating K. Babu (INC), who secured 54,320 votes. This marked a key victory for the Left in a constituency long held by Congress.

In 2011, K. Babu (INC) won comfortably with 65,342 votes and around 53% vote share, defeating CPI(M) by a margin of over 12,000 votes.

In 2006, K. Babu (INC) retained the seat with 58,952 votes, continuing Congress dominance in Thripunithura.

In 2001, K. Babu (INC) secured victory with 59,248 votes, establishing a stronghold that lasted for over a decade.

Thripunithura Voting Trends & Political Dynamics

Thripunithura was considered a Congress bastion for many years, largely due to the dominance of K. Babu. However, the 2016 victory of CPI(M) and the BJP’s surge in 2021 have transformed the constituency into a triangular contest.

Thripunithura Demography 

Thripunithura has a diverse urban population typical of central Kerala, with Nair and other upper-caste Hindu communities forming a dominant social group. Other key communities in the constituency include Ezhavas, along with sizeable Christian and Muslim populations. In terms of religion, Hindus constitute the majority, while Christians represent a significant minority and Muslims, though smaller in number, remain an influential segment of the electorate.
