As the Baramati bypoll gathers momentum, a quiet but telling unease is surfacing within the Maharashtra Congress. Senior leaders, speaking off the record, point not just to electoral anxieties but to what they describe as a deeper institutional shift — the near collapse of political communication between the ruling BJP and the opposition.

At the heart of the discontent is a sense that the unwritten rules of political engagement have changed. Congress leaders say there was a time, not too long ago, when lines of communication remained open regardless of ideological differences. The Leader of the Opposition and those in power would stay in touch — sometimes formally, often informally — to defuse tensions, exchange perspectives, or simply keep the system functioning with a degree of mutual respect.

“Such political culture where leaders in power used to directly dialled leader of opposition over complex issue with intention to resolved it has completely disappeared,” said senior congress leader on the condition of anonymity.

According to multiple sources, since 2014, the BJP has shown little inclination to engage the opposition in any structured or even informal manner. There are no courtesy calls, no backchannel conversations, and no visible effort to build consensus — even on issues where political coordination would have once been considered routine.

This growing communication vacuum is now being felt more sharply in the run-up to the Baramati bypoll, a contest that carries symbolic and strategic weight. Long seen as the political bastion of Sharad Pawar and Lt. Ajit Pawar, Baramati is not just another seat — it is a test of narrative, legacy, and control.

Congress leaders believe the absence of dialogue in such a high-stakes context is not incidental but reflective of a larger political approach — one that prefers unilateral decision-making over consultative politics. The concerns are not without precedent. A similar sentiment had quietly emerged during the 2024 bypoll in Nanded, held after the death of Vasant Chavan.

Even then, opposition leaders had flagged the lack of outreach from the ruling side, though the issue remained largely beneath the surface. What is different now is the timing and the terrain. With Baramati back in the spotlight, the communication breakdown is no longer a background complaint — it is becoming part of the political narrative itself.

For the Congress, the message is clear: this is not just about a bypoll. It is about the erosion of a political culture where dialogue once acted as a safety valve. And in its absence, the contest risks becoming sharper, more polarised, and far less predictable.
