The three-month-long tussle over the post of the chairman of the Abohar’s Khuian Sarwar panchayat samiti ended on Monday, with AAP leader Gurdev Singh Baggu receiving the backing of all anti-BJP parties.
Abohar is considered as the stronghold of state BJP chief Sunil Jakhar. Three meetings had been cancelled since December last year to elect the chairman.
In the fourth meeting called today, seven of eight BJP members were present. It was attended by two of three SAD members, one Congress and four AAP members.
As soon as the election process started, all the anti-BJP parties supported Gurdev Singh Baggu from Seed Farm Colony.
Baggu and BJP candidate Pinky Rani got seven votes each. After this, Subdivisional Magistrate (SDM) Ravinder Singh Arora tossed a coin, following which Gurdev Singh Baggu was declared elected as the chairman of the panchayat samiti.
Abohar MLA Sandeep Jakhar, who is the nephew of Sunil Jakhar, said the police, under “political pressure”, registered a “false case” against block samiti member Gurmeet Kaur and her husband Gurdeep Singh of Panjawa Mandla on Sunday at 1 pm.
He alleged that this was done under a conspiracy to prevent her from attending the election meeting.
He said the police personnel responsible for filing the “false case” would be held accountable in due course. He demanded from the district police chief to thoroughly investigate the matter.
The police said the case was registered on the basis of a medico-legal report received from the government hospital that supported Makhan Singh’s allegations of assault against his son and daughter-in-law.
In December 2025, eight BJP activists were elected as members of the panchayat samiti that has a total strength of 16 members.
In the today’s meeting, one of the three SAD members abstained from voting while Gurmeet Kaur of the BJP did not attend it.
