Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday spoke to Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) leader C Joseph Vijay over the phone and congratulated him on taking oath as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, sources said.
Vijay was sworn in as the Chief Minister earlier in the day, with Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar administering the oath of office and secrecy at a ceremony held in Chennai. He is the first chief minister from the TVK, which made its electoral debut in the 2026 Assembly elections.
Earlier, PM Modi conveyed his greetings in a message on social media, wishing Vijay a successful tenure and asserting that the Centre would continue to work with the Tamil Nadu government for the welfare of the people.
Along with Vijay, nine TVK leaders, N Anand, Aadhav Arjuna, K A Sengottaiyan, K G Arunraj, P Venkataramanan, R Nirmalkumar, Rajmohan, T K Prabhu and S Keerthana, were sworn in as ministers in the party’s first cabinet.
Vijay received the Governor at the venue ahead of the ceremony and introduced him to the ministers-designate.
The 2026 Assembly elections marked a significant political shift in Tamil Nadu, with TVK winning 108 of the 234 seats.
Though the party fell short of a majority on its own, it secured the backing of the Congress, CPI, CPI(M), VCK and the Indian Union Muslim League to cross the halfway mark and form the government.
Vijay, a popular film actor often referred to as ‘Thalapathy’, drew massive crowds during the campaign, with political observers drawing parallels between his rise and that of former chief minister MG Ramachandran.
His entry into active politics is being seen as the latest chapter in Tamil Nadu’s long tradition of actors playing a decisive role in public life.
