She was a jailer. He was a murder convict. They fell in love, and what followed was an interfaith marriage.
Firoza Khatoon, an Assistant Superintendent at Satna Central Jail in Madhya Pradesh, met Dharmendra Singh during her time as the warrant-in-charge at the prison, according to a report by India Today.
At the time, Singh was serving a life sentence in connection with the murder of a councillor in 2007 and the subsequent burial of his body. During this time, he assisted prison authorities with warrant-related tasks and engaged in frequent contact with Khatoon.
What began as a mere professional relationship developed into friendship, and later blossomed into love.
And The Wedding Bells
After serving nearly 14 years in prison, Dharmendra Singh was released around four years ago on grounds of good conduct, India Today reported.
According to the report, the couple then decided to get married. The wedding took place on May 5 in Madhya Pradesh’s Chhatarpur district.
Given it was an interfaith marriage, Singh changed his name on the wedding card to avoid social scrutiny. However, their relationship did not sit well with Khatoon’s Muslim family members, who skipped the ceremony.
In their absence, Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) district vice-president Rajbahadur Mishra and his wife performed the ‘kanyadan’ — a prominent ritual in Hinduism where the bride’s father formally entrust his daughter to the groom.
The wedding was also attended by members of the Bajrang Dal.
