Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday condoled the loss of lives in a massive blaze that broke out at a four-storey residential building in Vivek Vihar area of Shahdara in Delhi.
Nine people were killed, and several were injured after a fire broke out in a building located in Vivek Vihar Phase-I, spreading through apartments on the second, third, and fourth floors.
According to a statement by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), posted on ‘X’, “The loss of lives due to a fire mishap in Delhi’s Shahdara district is extremely distressing. Condolences to those who have lost their loved ones. Praying for the speedy recovery of the injured.”

PM Modi also announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh for the next of kin of each deceased.
“An ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lakh from PMNRF would be given to the next of kin of each of those who lost their lives. The injured would be given Rs. 50,000″, the statement read.
About Delhi Fire Tragedy
The incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday, May 3, triggering panic among residents. The fire department received the information about the blaze at about 3:47 A.M.
Upon reaching the spot, firefighters rescued multiple occupants, with around 10 to 15 people pulled out of the building during the operation. The injured were rushed to Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital for treatment.
Prima facie, the fire was sparked by a blast in the Air Conditioner installed in the apartment. However, a further probe remains underway into the matter.
