Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday intensified the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) campaign in Tamil Nadu with a high-energy roadshow in Mylapore. He launched sharp attacks on the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and expressed confidence about the BJP’s prospects in the state.

In Mylapore, Shah led a roadshow in support of BJP candidate Tamilisai Soundararajan, who is contesting from the constituency. Large numbers of BJP cadres and supporters lined the route, waving party flags and greeting the Home Minister as he passed by on a campaign vehicle alongside Tamilisai. Shah acknowledged the crowd and shared a video on X. “Mylapore turned saffron today. Watch roadshow at South Chennai,” his post reads.

Earlier in the day, while campaigning in the Modakurichi constituency for BJP candidate Kirthika Shivkumar, Shah launched a blistering attack on the DMK government, accusing it of corruption and dynastic politics. He alleged that Chief Minister M.K. Stalin’s primary objective was to promote his son, Udhayanidhi Stalin.

“First Karunanidhi, then Stalin, and now his son. This family nepotism will never do good for the people of Tamil Nadu,” Shah told supporters, positioning the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) as the only credible alternative for transparent governance.

He vowed that an NDA government would “end the DMK’s corruption” and appealed to voters to ensure a landslide victory for Kirthika Shivkumar in Modakurichi. “Our government will end the DMK’s corruption… I want to appeal to ensure the victory of the NDA’s BJP candidate, Kirthika Shivkumar, with a landslide victory,” he said.

Shah also targeted the Congress-DMK alliance on the issue of women’s representation and Tamil Nadu’s political interests. He accused both parties of historically obstructing women’s progress in Parliament and of denying an increase in the number of seats for Tamil Nadu.

“Congress and DMK stopped women from coming to Parliament, and they also declined the seat increment of Tamil Nadu,” he claimed, reiterating Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s commitment to “justice for Tamil Nadu’s women.”

“We assure on behalf of Narendra Modi that we will do justice with Tamil Nadu and India’s women and defeat the Congress and DMK’s plan,” Shah added.

Tamil Nadu will vote in a single phase on April 23, with counting of votes scheduled for May 4.
