The Tis Hazari Court has remanded Sarabjit Singh, the accused in the Delhi Assembly security breach case, to eight days of police custody.
Earlier, the Delhi Police had sought 10 days of police custody for Sarabjit Singh from the court, in order to conduct an in-depth investigation into the conspiracy behind the incident, potential connections, and other related aspects.
The police informed the court that they will interrogate the accused to ascertain how he gained entry into the Assembly and to determine whether any other individual played a role in this incident. Besides, the police said that they are searching for his mobile phone, which he had discarded.
The Delhi Police stated that Sarabjit Singh is mentally unwell and a visit is needed to visit Punjab and Uttar Pradesh to trace the vehicle in which he entered the Assembly complex.
Meanwhile, the counsel for the accused, Sarabjit, opposed the request for police custody stating that he is mentally unwell and is currently undergoing treatment.
According to the counsel, Sarabjit had suddenly left for Chandigarh to visit his sister, without informing anyone, and had subsequently visited a Gurudwara there.
The counsel stated that Sarabjit had gone to Chandigarh approximately 14–15 days ago; later, upon learning that his nephew had gone missing, he traveled to Delhi.
The counsel claimed that Sarabjit entered the Assembly premises under the mistaken belief that it was a Gurudwara.
The court questioned the accused’s counsel, noting that Sarabjit had driven all the way from Pilibhit to Chandigarh, and subsequently to Delhi.
The Delhi police arrested on Monday three people after an unidentified vehicle allegedly rammed through a security barrier at the Delhi Legislative Assembly and entered the high-security premises. The driver, identified as Sarabjit Singh, was among the main accused taken into custody.
Singh was among the three people taken into custody after the incident by the Delhi Police.
