Sarabjit Singh, the driver arrested by the Delhi Police for allegedly ramming through a security barrier and entering the high-security premises of the Delhi Legislative Assembly, appeared disoriented and gave a confused account of the events.

“I was looking for my missing nephew… someone fed me opium… I don’t know what happened, but I did not do anything wrong,” murmured Singh as a police team led by SHO Ramesh Chander conducted a spot interrogation after intercepting him in north Delhi’s Roop Nagar area.

Singh was among the three people taken into custody on Monday after the incident by the Delhi Police.

Chander and the team were the ones who spotted and apprehended Singh after a ‘BOLO’ (be on the lookout) notice was flashed to intercept the car following the breach on Monday.

Singh’s family rushed to Delhi from Pilibhit in Uttar Pradesh after learning about the incident and submitted documents related to his psychiatric treatment to the police, claiming he was innocent and had no criminal record.

His family said he was “mentally unstable” and did not inform his family about his destination or purpose. They said he had been missing from home in Pilibhit for five days and remained in contact for only one night after his departure on April 1, NDTV reported.

According to his mother, there are times when his behaviour becomes difficult to manage, adding that during such episodes, he does not listen to family members and often isolates himself.

“He is mentally unstable. He has been missing from home for five days. We ourselves do not know where he is,” she was quoted as saying.

Meanwhile, Singh told police he was distraught after his sister’s son Harman went missing on April 2 from west Delhi’s Hari Nagar. In order to find him, Singh said he went on a road trip, visiting Chandigarh and other places in Punjab to pray.

Police said Singh’s claims are being verified and added that the “missing child” narrative has been confirmed. Officers also said Singh appeared so incoherent that even after leaving the Assembly premises, he wanted to return to “meet some officers.” It was around this time that he encountered two other people, including a taxi driver, police added.

He gave him money to take him to meet a “high-ranking official” who could help him. CCTV footage confirmed he was alone at the time of the breach.

A high-level committee has been set up to investigate the recent security breach at the Delhi Legislative Assembly, sources said. The probe will be supervised by an officer of Additional Director General (ADG) rank.
